It was one hell of a year within the four walls of Performance360 in 2012. Here are my Top 20 most impressive feats of strength and athleticism displayed by our members.

The decision on what to include and how to order it was no small task. Let me know what you guys think of the ordering!  Would you shuffle anything around? Add anything we missed?

#20: Janka Lopatto 36″ Box Jump x 50

#19: Elyse Paulson 44# Box Jump w/ Approach

#18: Matt Gordon 485# Deadlift @ 208 lbs.

Back popped up and bar was spinning out of control but credit his incredibly strong trunk for forging through a sloppy pull.

#17: Kristen Petersen 140# Jerk

Kristen will be hitting 150# or 155# soon enough. This was almost too easy to include in this list.

#16: Rachael Sporko 205# x 4 Squat

We don’t have a video of this so we’ll link to the Facebook video of her barely missing appropriate depth of 215# x 4 on the set immediately after her successful depth of 205# x 4.

#15: Elyse Paulson 140# Hang Clean

#14: Alan Lavenda 415# Deadlift @ 159 lbs.

We are through #20 to #11, all very impressive and respectable accomplishments.

Things are about to get kicked up a notch in the Top 10.

#10: Kristi Miller 8 Minute Plank

#9: Megan May 13 Pull-Ups

This was just part of a workout so we did not know she was going to knock out 13.  We only managed to capture four on camera, but this was the actual set she knocked out the women’s record.

#8: Robby Sparango 450# Farmer’s Walks @ 145 lbs.

#6. Than Merrill 315# x 50 Squats

#5. Hoffman Leung Gets Feet on 62″ Box Jump

While that rep was not technically counted, it is still impressive. Here he is locking out 60 inches for the gym record.

#4. Brad Sweet 285# Press (No Jerk)

#3. Elyse Paulson 300# Deadlift @ 135 lbs.

#2. Jason Weber 57″ Box Jump @ 260 lbs.

Unfortunately, we don’t have an image or video of this so you’ll just have to take our word for it…and his cape he earned.

#1. Shawn Anderson 525# Deadlift @ 176 lbs.

Dan Jahnke 505 @ 173 lbs.
I want to also recognize Dan here, as well.  Dan missed this 505# lockout by under a half inch, but we are putting it here regardless.

And the single most impressive feat I witnessed in 2012 was Shawn Anderson pulling 525 pounds at a body weight of 176 pounds.

Shawn Anderson 525# Deadlift @ 176 lbs.

Now, the most impressive part of that to me is not only his speed off the floor but the fact that lift was performed raw. No belts, no straps, no lifting shoes. Just pure, unfiltered fucking power.

We had a list almost fifty accomplishments long and it took me a fairly long time to arrive at the inclusions and ordering of the Top 20

Hats off to all of the men and women here, especially those who cracked the Top 10.  I cannot wait to see what this list looks like next December.

Next up, Most Impressive Before and Afters.

I’m coming at you from a dingy terminal in the far corners of LAX.  I am sitting in what honestly looks like a shed.  It’s in the middle of the runway, supposedly associated with a larger terminal but a hub this is most certainly not.  There is a smoke alarm that keeps beeping presumably from what I believe is a dying battery and I’ve heard “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire” over the speakers for what’s gotta be the fourth or fifth time.

Oh, did I mention I almost missed my connection by nine minutes?

540 seconds.

Yyyeah.

Is this LAX or Ethiopia?

This time of year is huge for goals so upward and onward we continue with our New Year’s theme throughout December on DTP.com.  We all know that  January represents an uptick in attendance for all gyms and gym goers, and we typically see a more energized crowd as 2013 hits the calendars at Performance360.

One thing I have learned is that a very small percentage of folks really know exactly what they want out of fitness.  Sure, some folks have the very specified goals of losing 25 pounds, hitting a 2x body weight deadlift or breaking a certain time in a triathlon but I’ve observed the reality that most have absolutely no idea what they want out of fitness.  This isn’t an observation limited to the beginner, as I find that most people never bother to set and complete fitness-related goals over the course of their training until much later than they should have.  It’s never too late to start getting more serious with goals for you veterans, either.

Hello, friends!  We are now officially 26 days away from 2013.  Not only does the New Year typically represent a fresh slate from which to create new goals, but it also means planet Earth is going to explode soon and I don’t know about you, but I want to look incredible when I’m flipping the bird to the Mayans on my way out of town.

I mostly love but also sort of resent this time of year.  The positive side of me loves it because a vast majority of people tend to take fitness and diet seriously, so for at least thirty days everyone  listens to every word we say as fitness professionals.  It’s like our yearly 15 minutes.  Our Gangnam Style.

The cynic side of me becomes annoyed that people can only take their health seriously based on some arbitrary calendar date that really has no effect on your life, and wishes that razor-sharp focus happened year round.
